Refugia Botanica: Isolation into Transformation to Open Doors

Refugia Botanica is an ongoing research-based art project by Ujhelyi-Sebestyén Zita exploring themes of isolation, transformation, and emotional ecology through botanical metaphors. Originating during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when her children collected flowers as small gestures of care, the project reflects on resilience and regeneration in times of social and psychological confinement.

Combining photography, cyanotype, collage, and installation, Zita creates fragile visual refuges — spaces where nature, memory, and identity coexist. Her practice is experimental and research-driven, continuously evolving in dialogue with material and concept. Through organic forms, layered transparency, and play with light, Refugia Botanica reveals how beauty and growth can emerge from isolation. The project is envisioned as both a contemplative solo exhibition and an open curatorial platform inviting collaboration with other artists and local communities.
